Interviews – Talk to the role on offer

📍 Interviews

âś… Talk to the role on offer!

A common mistake in interviews is to present yourself at interview and provide a very good account of your experience but depend on the interviewers to see you in the role.

📍As the interviewee you have the opportunity to help the interviewers see you in the role. It takes a slightly different approach to do this, but one that is well worth it in terms of really bringing across your transferable skills in the interview and being successful in getting the job.

How do you go about doing that?

âś…Start that the beginning, if you are fortunate to get the opportunity to open the interview, tell them about your interest in the role, words like
“I have carefully considered where my next career move will be, and I feel the skills and experience I have really meet the requirements and experience you are looking for in this role, I am looking forward to sharing my experience over the course of the interview today”

This tells the interviewers you are not just here to get the job, or do a practice run to get another job, you are here because you have taken careful consideration to your next role, and this is the role for you. Add to that your skills and experience more than meet what they are looking for and they should now be looking forward to hearing what those skills are.

✅Competencies – You will get a series of competencies that you are assessed under, for example, leadership, teamwork, results, decision making, problem solving, stakeholder engagement etc.

a. In each of these answers try and bring out a skill set that is relevant to the role that is on offer. For example, if the company are likely to go through a period of change, then bring in an example when you added value to a change process.

b. Before you get to work on your competency story, read the job specification and really understand what it is the company defines the competency to be. For example, if it is “Leadership” what type of leader are they looking for…transactional, transformational etc…try and align the story/example you are given to align to what they need.

✅Close the interview – Bring your closing statement back to the job specification and highlight your confidence to do the role but also to add value to the position.

Small changes and a real focus on the role that is in offer can bring great success in an interview.
