” Comfortable with being uncomfortable” – Interviews.
” Comfortable with being uncomfortable” – Interviews.

Job interviews can feel intimidating, there are a few people that wake up on job interview day and are excited and ready to sell their skills, however most people find the whole process of selling themselves in an interview to be nothing short of uncomfortable and a daunting experience.

That is perfectly normal to feel like that…it is daunting, and it is a difficult thing to do.

However, interviews especially competency-based interviews are and have been a very effective way of finding out if someone would do well in a role. There is a lot of reliability and validity in the structured interview process, and it simply works as one of the best predicators of future job performance.

So as an interviewee we have got to own the process, and prepare for it… step outside your comfort zone and highlight your experience to the interview panel…
It is and it is not in equal measure, but it can definitely be done. Here are a few tips.

Get your Mindset
Think of the interview as your personal pitch meeting. It is your chance to show how your experience matches their needs, and to present your value with confidence. You are not just answering questions—you are proving you are the solution they have been looking for.

Practical Tips to Get in the Zone
Remind yourself: it is just one hour. You can go back to being your laid-back self after. For now, it is showtime.

Sit on the edge of your chair. It keeps your posture alert, your energy forward-facing, and signals that you are fully engaged.

Eliminate distractions. Mute notifications, close other tabs, and ensure your environment is clean and calm. Full focus is key.

Dress for confidence. Even if it is virtual, wear something that makes you feel sharp and professional.

Practice power statements. Have 2–3 short stories ready that highlight your wins—quantify results if you can.

Breathe and pause. Do not rush. A well-timed pause before answering shows confidence and gives you time to be clear and compelling.

Visualise success. Before the interview, close your eyes for 60 seconds and imagine the conversation going smoothly—you are relaxed, confident, and in control.

Use positive body language. Eye contact, nodding, and smiling all help build rapport and show you are present.

Your Experience Is Worth It—So sell it!
Remember, interviews are not about being perfect—they are about being prepared, present, and purposeful. It is okay to feel nervous. Just channel that energy into clarity and confidence. You have done the hard work to get to this point.
