Career Resilience has never been so important

Career resilience is the ability to adapt when things don’t go as expected, recover from setbacks and continue moving forward when your working life changes.

That might mean not getting the job or promotion you wanted, facing redundancy, feeling stuck in a role, returning to work after time away or simply realising that the career you once wanted no longer feels right.

Career resilience doesn’t mean pretending that these things don’t disappoint or unsettle you. It means finding a way forward when they do.

Here are a few things that can help.

1. Give yourself time, but keep moving

A career setback can knock your confidence. Take time to process what has happened, but try not to become completely stuck in it. Even one small action can help you regain a sense of direction.

2. Build and use your network

Don’t wait until you need a job to start connecting with people. Keep your LinkedIn profile current, stay in touch with former colleagues and make time for professional relationships. Conversations often open up possibilities you hadn’t considered.

3. Keep developing

Upskilling can be valuable, but don’t automatically assume another qualification is the answer. Start by identifying where you want to go next and then look honestly at whether there is a genuine skills or education gap you need to address.

4. Take ownership of your career

It is your career. You don’t have to have the entire plan worked out, but you do need to take the next step. That might mean updating your CV, exploring another sector, applying for a role, talking to someone in your network or getting some support to work out what comes next.

5. Remember what you already bring

When something goes wrong professionally, it is very easy to focus on what you don’t have or what didn’t work. Take stock of the experience, skills, relationships and achievements you have already built. They don’t disappear because one opportunity didn’t work out.

Career paths are rarely completely straightforward. There will be changes, disappointments and unexpected turns along the way.

Resilience isn’t about having every answer. Sometimes it’s simply about being willing to take the next step.
