Returning the work – The new normal!
As more and more of our working population are returning to work, there is no doubt there is mixed emotions on leaving the on-line world of work and embracing the new normal. For some working from home was a stressful experience and for others it was a exactly what they were looking for. A few take ways to consider during this time of transition:
– Some positives, such as a return of structure, the feeling of being back in the working world, getting to meet and engage with friends and colleagues.
– Some negatives are likely to be the challenge of child care, the commute to work and the time that now needs to be factored in to your working day to accommodate it.
What ever your experience is, the new normal is likely to be a mix of both. The ability to take the good experiences from Covid 19 is important, and hopefully the resilience to deal with the challenges. These last few months have been unique and have hopefully provided us all with some positive experiences that we can take with us into our new normal. #covid #careers #newnormal #careerlessons

Is now the time to take up part -time study?
There are a great many benefits of returning to education or taking up a course of study for the first time. The learning can be challenging, but enjoyable, and can bring a lot of benefit to you, your role and the organisation you work for. A few things to consider:
Costs
– Would your organisation support you? Many organisations do, it could be worth checking if your organisation does.
– Springboard – if you are employed you can get 90% funding for a chosen programme through Springboard+ and 100% funding if you’re unemployed or returning to the workplace. https://springboardcourses.ie/
– Tax back – You can claim tax relief on fees paid at the end of the tax year.

Career coaching – Is now the time to get some help?
Covid 19 has brought different experiences and challenges to everyone. For some their skills are in demand and they are struggling to get through the workload and the working week. For other times have never been more uncertain.
It is probably fair to say that some help along the way when navigating your career is a good thing, however there are key times when it is important to get some help and support. Perhaps for some that time is now, why?
– It takes effort and it is not easy, coaches can navigate the way forward, bringing a clear pathway to light.
– It takes a positive mindset, not always as easy thing to have, particularly when everything feels like a challenge. Job search anxiety is real and is difficult without some support.
– It makes moving forward easy and possible and more importantly it will deliver the result you are looking for, a new job, a move to a new career, identifying upskilling needs etc.
My own experience is that providing some professional help and guidance to my clients, is only positive and has a huge contribution to success in this area.

Emotions -COVID 19
Emotions have come to my mind over the past few months. Emotions are chemicals released in response to our interpretation of a specific trigger. Research has agreed on six essentially universal emotions: Happiness, Surprise, Disgust, Anger, Fear and Sadness. It is highly likely that the majority of us have experienced all of these emotion during this Covid 19 pandemic.
Emotional Contagion is another word that has come to mind. Emotional contagion is the phenomenon of having one person’s emotions and related behaviours directly trigger similar emotions and behaviours in other people. In other words, our happiness or sadness are shared across the people we meet and interact with. Perhaps this is a good thing, we may have the ability to turn someone’s bad day into a good one, however we do have the ability to do the opposite. Food for thought perhaps as we make our way through the exit stages of Covid 19.
Perhaps a few tips to keep in mind:
1. Be aware of your own emotions, and the possibility of sharing that emotion with other people.
2. When you begin to feel negative, recognise it and try and do something that will improve that feeling, such as a walk, a chat, a smile or a favourite TV programme.
3. Be wise about the sources you take your information from, try and separate the real information from the frenzy.

Tips for on-line learners

Next month I will upskill in the area of on-line moderating by embarking on the course “Moderating for on-line environments” through Ul. It has allowed me to reflect on some key tips I would give a “new” on-line learner, who is embarking on this for the first time

1. Be brave – It’s not that scary, well it is a little bit, but there is so much help at hand, all of the on-line courses are supported with moderators (they are the help) and technical experts to get you up and running
2. Technology -Make yourself familiar with the platform, for example know where the chat forums are, where you upload your work etc.
3. Find a place to study – The kitchen table is tempting but its’ not a great place to get this new learning started
4. Set yourself some goals – Set yourself a short, medium- and long-term goal, much easier to achieve goals if they are written down.

Career Resilience has never been so important

Resilience is a word that has come to me a lot over the last number of weeks. Resilience is defined as “as the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt well to change, and keep going in the face of adversity (Ovans, 2015). Career resilience is all these things and can take a positive mindset to ensure that we keep going in challenging times.
Here are a few tips to keep your career resilience in place.

1. Keep a positive mindset – Not easily done, but it does make a big difference, there is opportunity in everything, and there is opportunity in this current scenario we are facing, all be it exceedingly difficult to see.

2. Build your networks – You may have some time on your hands to build some connections. Building a good LinkedIn profile is a really good way of getting connected to people. However, you can also do it by getting in touch with your own network.

3. Upskill- There are loads of opportunities now to learn and upskill on-line and lots of companies are offering free courses.

4. Take charge – This is your career, own it, take action where it is needed, seek help if you need it, but don’t sit and procrastinate it is always better to move forward, even if that is baby steps.

As the research from the Harvard Business Review tells us, your resilience comes from yourself. You may need some help in finding it, but it is there, and it has never been more important.
